Coach Bill Cherpak of Thomas Washington High School in Pennsylvania talks about effort. “100% effort all the time. Even if we are doing a walk-through then the hundred percent has to be mental. If we are in the weight room, running, or kickboxing class, whatever we do it has to be 100%. The kids have to understand that giving 100% doesn’t apply just when I am watching them, but they have to give 100% on their own, whether I’m watching or not.”

Then the attitude that, “The team always comes first, team comes before the individual”. If the team wins, then the individual acclamations will come after that.

One of the things we try to do is coach everybody.  So when the young kids need to step-up, their ready.  We graduate a lot of players, but the kids behind them are ready to step right in.  That has been the biggest thing that we have done right. (more…)

Coach Lee Grisham of Wimberely High School in Texas talks about what hard-work means for this six time state championship winning program. “We do a lot of weight-room training. During the season we lift on Tuesdays and Fridays. We lift weights during our athletic period; take a forty minute break; then practice for two hours.”

5 time Wyoming High School Football State Champion coach Don Julian talks about re-creating a winning culture and preparing young men to be leaders, “As a staff we say that we want to create “young men” that when they leave us, they are “young men” for others. We started working with our seniors on servant leadership and our seniors started packing balls and carrying water bottles.”

A team must work to improve it’s skill by paying close attention to the minutia of details. Whether in the off-season or during the tournament, we try to improve even the smallest of details.

A team must have high expectations.  Everyone has a desire to win, but you must also have a desire to prepare to win.  Everyone wants to win a state championship.  But you have to do all the necessary details in order to put yourself in a position to win that state championship.  It’s easy to say, it is hard to do. Falling Forward

“I am a believer in getting a lot of kids on the field during a game.  In the first half of our state championship game this year, we had 50 different kids on the field.  Coaches should know the kid doesn’t have to be your best player to be able to spell a guy for two or three plays during a game.  Yet just getting on the field for two or three plays will make him feel like such an integral part of the team that he will give everything…”  Coach Verbanic (more…)

Coach Moss also discusses giving back to the community.  “Last year we had 115 girls, k-8 at our camp!  We also hosted a Go Girl Go Day last summer where we had 110 girls playing softball, volleyball, jumping rope, climbing the rock wall, and bike riding.  We are very active in the community, and I feel it is very important that these players spend time with the young girls who look up to them. ”
